Let's keep Clarendon's heritage alive! Be a part of the effort!
The 1946 Mulkey Theatre is a landmark of downtown Clarendon and is currently undergoing renovations at the hands of the CEDC that will transform the building into a functioning movie theatre as well as give it new life as a performance hall and the city’s official Visitors’ Center.
As part of its ongoing mission to revitalize downtown, the Clarendon EDC purchased the Mulkey in 2008; and since that time has invested more than $104,000 to preserve the building, prevent further deterioration, restore neon lighting, and make additional repairs. The former barbershop in the front of the theatre was converted to the new CEDC / Chamber of Commerce office in 2012. Phase One of the overall Mulkey Renovation Project is currently underway, focusing on complete rehabilitation of the façade at a cost of $128,000. This work should be completed in the first quarter of 2013, and will bring the total community investment to date to over $230,000.
The Mulkey Theatre is a treasure not only to our community, but to the State of Texas as well, earning a designation as one of Preservation Texas’ 2011 “Most Endangered Places". Phase Two of the project will include a complete renovation on the interior of the Mulkey, bringing this space back into use as a theatre for both movies and the live arts and complete the transformation of the Mulkey as a convention and visitors’ center. In addition to motion pictures and the live arts, the auditorium will serve as a conference and training facility for numerous groups needing adequate seating and access to such technologies as PowerPoint capabilities and sound systems, and it will also be available for public meetings. More than $100,000 has already been collected for Phase Two, and grant applications are being submitted, but we still need YOUR help to “Bring Back the Mulkey.”
Please consider making a donation today. Ways to donate can be found below, or please contact our office to discuss other options. Any donation is appreciated, but with a sponsorship at any of the following levels, your name will be permanently displayed at the Mulkey Theatre.
